Harvest Wednesday with Cowboy Mouth (lots of photos)

Harvest the Music benefits Second Harvest Food Bank and is a free weekly event at Lafayette Square every Wednesday at 5 pm through November 3rd.

I’ll be honest, not every Wednesday concert is my favorite cup of tea, but they’re always fun. I always get to run into people I know. I’m always free to dance if I care to (and I often do). There are always colorful characters in the crowd. And there’s always great food and drink. And the music’a always good even when it’s not what moves me.

Y’at band, Creole String Beans, got the show started. Specializing in jukebox favorites, their covers of old favorites like “Poison Ivy” and “Get Rhythm” got the growing crowd moving and singing along. The set ended with an upbeat version of “Morgus the Magnificent.”

For those not in the know, Morgus the Magnificent was the host of a local late-night series of horror and sci-fi movies premiering in the late 1950’s. The show, along the lines of Elvira, featured Morgus and his sidekick Chopsley screwing up scientific experiments. Local references aside, the song was a rousing topper to a fun opener.

During the break, event sponsors, the Hornets, gave away free tickets to their season’s starting game against Milwaukee.

Though only a select few were lucky enough to win the tickets, we were all lucky to have the lovely Honeybees wandering the crowd in tiny outfits and giant smiles. (photos below)

Among the many food booths, Rouses, another of the event’s sponsors, served a traditional shrimp and grits. I’m happy to report that the grits were smooth and creamy, not at all the gummy rubbery mash often served from booths. And I get a kick out of knowing everything I eat and drink helps to feed needy families in the New Orleans area. Between my beers and nosh, my $18 dollars provided 72 meals. Now, that’s “good” eating!

The crowd, slightly older than last week’s Anders Osborne fans, were on their feet and ready to rock when Cowboy Mouth took the stage. Though the band has a Southern flavor, the music is pure rock and roll. The band’s jet-fueled front man, Fred LeBlanc, all but insisted that the crowd push to the front and crowd the stage. LeBlanc also serves as the band’s drummer, affording the crowd a rare opportunity to keep their eyes on lightning speed hands.

The band also features a female bass player, Casandra Faulconer. Both she and Matt Jones are brand new to the group. Though turnover seems to be a part of the Cowboy Mouth tradition, the new members seem up to the task. Other than LeBlanc’s fussiness over sound issues and cursing in front of the crowd’s many children, the band was tight and skilled – a lean, mean music-making machine.

September is Hunger Action month so be sure to join the festivities next week when Rebirth Brass Band will be playing. Harvest the Music benefits Second Harvest Food Bank and is a free weekly event every Wednesday at 5 pm through November 3rd. For more info on Second Harvest:
