Fat Tuesday 2020 – Costumes!

Fat Tuesday – Mardi Gras in French – splits the city into parade-goers and costumers. Parade-goers attend the Krewe of Zulu and Krewe of Rex parades. Diehards stay for the long procession of truck parades – basic floats with no bands or dancers.

‘tit Rex Parade & WGNO’s Post-Oscar Show

The ‘tit Rex parade is a miniature-float satirical spectacle of big creativity in tiny form. I would be appearing on WGNO’s post-Oscar News With A Twist so we needed to head to the pre-parade lineup and skip the glacially-paced dragging of the delicate floats with frequent stops to pose for photos and closer looks. A reaction to super Krewe parades, ‘tit Rex was inspired by the local tradition of kids decorating shoeboxes and parading them through school, so the creations are nostalgic for many.

A crowd of Barbie and her crawfish-eating, Hand-Grenade-drinking friends in waited for the floats – their arms outstretched over NOPD barriers, their kids sitting atop ladder chairs. Continue reading

Krewe du Vieux & Krewedelusion

Though we’ve already attended Chewbacchus and Krewe Boheme, it doesn’t really feel like parade season until the satirical  Krewe du Vieux rolls followed for over a decade by Krewedelusion. For over 30 years, Krewe du Vieux has tackled local, national and global issues with bawdy humor and lots of phalluses. And their many brass bands are among the city’s best.

The theme was Erection 2020 and topics included climate change, the electoral college, foreign interference in our elections, caucusing, and even Commander’s Palace. For locals, both parades had to open with the Hard Rock Hotel collapse Continue reading
