Lundi Gras is all about the floats. Krewe of Proteus, the oldest night parade, was established in 1882 and the last I heard, the majestic floats still sit atop the original wooden chassis. The Krewe of Orpheus floats include lighted favorites like the dragon whose head moves and blows smoke, the super-long locomotive Smokey Mary and the Trojan Horse carrying a live band. But the real showstoppers are the floats covered in vibrant and plentiful flowers flecked with gold.
Orpheus celebrates musicians and performers. This year’s star-studded royalty offered Mario Lopez and Trace Adkins. Krewe co-founder Harry Connick Jr. rode as king along with his wife, Jill Goodacre, in the same float we got to ride in with Quentin Tarantino in 2014. Continue reading →

We’ve heard it a lot in the last few days – this was the best Carnival (Mardi Gras season) in years. In fairness, a lot of it had to do with the extraordinarily wonderful weather. After the 50 degree rain-soaked Krewe of Cleopatra parade, most days were 70-80 and sunny with breezes. This year, I danced in 3 parades with the Pussyfooters. We were excited to debut our super-hero-inspired capes and signature pink corsets at the Cleopatra parade but mostly ended up covered in dripping-wet plastic sacks. That said, the crowds kept us inspired. Carnival parades are like a perpetual motion machine. The paraders bring energy to the crowds and the crowds bring energy to the paraders.
Though routines are set, each year I get to do new things at Mardi Gras and have new experiences. Continue reading →

Proteus is the second oldest Krewe in the history of Carnival (1882). This year’s theme of the Mythology of Astrology featured Zodiac floats among others.
This year’s theme for the Krewe of Orpheus was Delectable Delights. Orpheus is fairly new (1993), but they debuted with a splash as one of the largest and most celebrity studded parades. This year’s parade featured Saints head coach, Sean Payton, actor Steve Zahn, Harry Connick, Jr., LSU baseball coach, Paul Mainieri, and musicians Smashmouth and Taylor Dayne. Continue reading →
