Satchmo SummerFest – Friday

Celebrating Louis Armstrong’s August birthday,  Satchmo SummerFest is often the sweatiest festival of the year, but rain cooled the day. The rain also left the grassy yard of the U.S. Mint a muddy mess. But much of the fest is tented and Friday was a great kickoff to the fest with food and beverage booths, non-stop live music on multiple stages and symposiums on Armstrong and related topics. We stopped by The Preservation Brass entertaining a crowd then started our day with a Soft-shell Crab Poboy served on Dong Phong Bread with Pink Sauce from Ajun Cajun and a Royal House Chopped Salad with Fried Oysters. Irma Thomas’ Mother’s Day at the Zoo

For 31 years, Mother’s Day has meant Irma Thomas and The Professionals at Audubon Zoo. I’m not a mother so I wasn’t privy to this time-honored ritual until this year, when we accompanied 2 mother’s to Audubon Park for brunch at the Clubhouse Café followed by an afternoon at the zoo. The oak-shaded Clubhouse patio was filled with families, many with small children dressed to make their mothers proud. Indoors, there was an ample spread of all-you-can-eat breakfast delights from the design-your-own-omelet bar to bagels and lox as well as local favorites like a creamy mirliton soup and grits & grillades. French Quarter Fest Saturday

The French Quarter Fest is as much about local cuisine as it is about our amazing music with over 65 local vendors tempting tastebuds with everything from spicy seafood to sweet snowballs. Saturday, the  festival was also the proving ground for Rouses Crawfish Eating World Championship. There were several rounds of competition culminating with the 4th annual win for Sonya Thomas AKA “The Black Widow.” She managed to pack 2.2 pounds of crawfish into her 100 pound body in 10 minutes. Louisianan hunk Adrian Morgan came in second with 2 pounds. I finished one Pulled Pork Sandwich topped with Cole Slaw ($6) from The Joint while watching Continue reading
